Lot Essay

This form is after a German silver coffee pot of circa 1700-1720, which would have had a wooden handle; it was copied at Meissen in about 1740 as well as in Chinese export porcelain. Compare the armorial coffee pot of this shape in the Hodroff Collection, illustrated by D. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p.158, no.172, which the author dates to circa 1750. Although this form is found in the 1760's - 1780's, the moulding of the spout became more simplified.
