Lot Essay

For an example of a sauceboat of 1742 with a similar handle as well as similarly capped feet made in London by Christian Hillan see Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby's Directory of Silver 1600-1940, page 206.
Newcastle could be referred to as one of the most important of the provincial assay offices, and Kirkup was one of the major silversmiths until his death in 1753. Among the items with his mark is the Newcastle Gold Cup of 1728, one of only two known pieces of 18th century Newcastle gold.
