the convex plate with a seahorse on a rockwork base flanked by foliate sprays over a foliate-carved apron with printed label to reverse DAY/Carver, Gilder. Looking Glass Manufacturer/and Picture Frame Maker/(Near the Sign of the Black Prince)/Walworth Road/Newington Butts, Surrey/Kemmish and Son, Scientific and Commercial Press, Borough. and also with chalk inscription MEREDITH/110 E 58/1126/652/WJG, the outer carvings reattached

Lot Essay

Day is recorded as the carver and gilder to His Majesty circa 1815. He worked at 64 Kennington St, Newington, London, and his trade card read in part 'Chimney and Pier Glasses Manufactured'. (See The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p.990).
