Lot Essay

The pavilion in the grounds of Dunrobin Castle was enlarged by George, 3rd Duke of Sutherland (1828-92), to form a small museum of ethnology, archaeology and natural history. In it he placed the sarcophagus given to him by the Prince of Wales after their visit to Egypt in 1869, stuffed birds and animals, archaeological items excavated locally and artefacts from all over the world, either collected by him or donated by friends and local residents. The 4th Duke of Sutherland added to these collections.
