Lot Essay

This bronze figure of Mercury is a near identical copy of a black basalt version made by John Flaxman for the Wedgwood factories in 1775. His original invoice to the factory mentions him providing two statues, this figure and another of Apollo, for 1 guinea a piece (see Reilly, loc. cit.).
