A PAIR OF LATE LOUIS XV GILTWOOD FAUTEUILS A LA REINE
Circa 1767, by Nicolas Heurtaut, one chair stamped three times N.HEURTAUT, the other stamped twice
En suite with the preceeding lot. each with cartouche-form arched padded back, arms and bowed seat covered in crimson silk velvet, the scrolling cartouche cresting centered by pilasters issuing trailing floral sprays, the stiff leaf-carved arms with scroll and rosette terminals, the panelled seat-rail centerered by an acanthus clasp, on fluted tapering legs headed with panelled rosettes and leaf-tip collar, with stiff-leaf carved toupie feet (2)

Originally from a larger suite comprising twelve fauteuils and a canapé, this suite was conceived with Beauvais tapestry upholstery and is indeed illustrated with its original covers in the catalogue for the sale of Madame André Saint's collection in Paris, 21 May 1935, lot 150. Bill Pallot dates them stylistically to around 1767, when Heurtaut's principal clients were Nicolas de Boullogne, M. Chabenat de Bonneuil, the duc de Gèsvres, the marquis de Genlis and the duchesse d'Enville at La Roche Guyon. A set of six fauteuils and a canapé from La Rocheguyon, now in the Louvre is illustrated in B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, Dijon, vol. II, 1993, pp. 110-113, no. 36.
