Lot Essay

Christophe Fratin (1800-1864) was highly regarded for his animal sculpture, in which he demonstrated a sympathetic and sensitive understanding of natural forms and movement. This, in the early stages was presumably influenced by his father, a taxidermist. He later studied under Gericault where he developed his affinity with the animal world further. He exhibited at the Salon from 1831 to 1839 and from 1850 to 1864.
