Lot Essay

Michael Mahoney relates the figure falling from his horse in the lower register of this drawing to Rosa's large picture of a battle in the Galleria Palatina, Florence, M. Mahoney, op. cit., p. 243, pl. 27. Dr Mahoney dates the picture, and by extension the present drawing, to 1645-6.
