The philosophical undertone to this arcadian idyll is suggested by the reference to Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), a Swiss painter, philosopher and Romantic poet who had a profound effect on Giani's outlook, A. Ottani Cavina, op. cit., Milan, 1999, pp. 75-6 and figs. 120 and 122.
