A South German gilt-metal and ebony quarter-striking tower clock
Unsigned. Circa 1620
The silver chapter ring with Roman (I to XII) and Arabic (13 to 24) numerals with a foliate engraved gilt centre and later blued steel hand, silver subsidiary quarter dial below (I to IIII) centred by foliate engraving (previously enamelled), the reverse set with subsidiary silvered strike dials and pierced with three winding holes, the going train with brass spring barrel with steel cap, gut fusee and re-converted verge escapement with steel balance wheel, the tandem strike trains with brass barrels, gut fusees, striking hours and quarters on two bells above, the alarm assembly positioned to the right side and striking on the larger of the two bells, the case with gilt-metal moulded base cast and stipple chased with formal strapwork and fruit, similar engraving to the four sides of the case, the detachable side panels set with quoined glazed arched windows, the galleried superstructure above with urn and spindle finials (some later), later gilt-metal angel figure to the canopy above; the ripple-moulded ebony base on winged hairy paw feet and with a drawer to the front
