A German gilt-metal four train quarter-striking astronomical rectangular table clock with alarm
Stamped V.S. Circa 1600
The gilt rectangular dial composed of three outer silver and three inner gilt-metal concentric rings, the later outer ring displaying Arabic minutes, the inner concentric in silver ring engraved twice XII, the third silver ring indicating the calendar (1 to 31), the outer gilt-metal ring calibrated twice 1 to 12 separated by the letters T (Tag) and N (Nacht), the second gilt-metal ring indicating the age of moon calibrated 0 to 29 and also engraved with the moon's phase visible through a later top cover, the flanking subsidiary dials with restored cloisonné enamelling and engraved with the abbreviations in Italian for the months and days of the week with later brass hands, two levers for strike/silent (engraved S) and for advancing the quarter hours (engraved), the substantial movement with eight rectangular section pillars riveted to the back plate, thick brass rectangular plates, the four trains all with going barrels, the going train with restored verge escapement with blued steel balance and engraved balance cock, restored blued steel stackfreed, the quarters and hours struck on individual bells with the alarm striking on the hour bell, the back plate stamped with the maker's mark .V.S., the back plate also stamped in German with the four winding indications; WECK (alarm), GEH (going train), SCHLAG (hour strike) and FIRT (quarter train), the bells with decorative gilt-metal securing straps visible through the later gilt-metal movement cover plate pierced with four winding holes, the rectangular case with plain mouldings and on gilt bun feet
