A German gilt-metal and ebony quarter-striking table clock
Unsigned. Dated 1621
The front dial plate engraved to the base with two facing foliate herms centred by foliage and the date punch 1621, the later chapter ring flanked by foliage and engraved with an outer Arabic 1 to 24 ring and inner Roman I to XII ring, the centre with a later revolving disc engraved with the months with their relevant Zodiac sign and centred by a concentric ring indicating the relevant number of days in each month, later serpentine hand with sunburst centre and solar pointer, the rear dial similarly engraved with foliage with two cherubs to the base flanking a dial engraved with the days of the week and their relevant deities beneath a quarter dial, engraved above with an eyrie and an eagle feeding two eaglets, beneath the eyrie an engraved star and the initials SIC (sanctissimi jesuru cordis) and Ibis qui diligunt, the concave moulded top engraved with foliage and with six pierced roundels set with portrait profiles and surmounted by a later finial, the movement with square section steel pillars, central going train with steel fusee and barrel, later centre wheel and re-built verge escapement, the strike train positioned on the left side with steel fusee and barrel and calibrated gilt-brass countwheel applied to the outer steel plate and visible through the foliate engraved removable side panel, the quarter strike train with steel fusee and barrel and calibrated brass quarter countwheel applied to an outer steel plate with three punched stamps for the town of origin (identical stamps to the opposing steel plate); case re-gilt
