A French gilt-brass and porcelain-mounted striking and repeating carriage clock
Possibly Brunelot. Circa 1885
The oval case with Greek key handle, mounted with bowed porcelain side panels decorated with classical ladies beside pillars, on black backgrounds further embellished with gilt branches, the dial painted with two amorini, one playing the pipes, paying homage to a statue of Pan, with later repeat button, gilt Roman chapter ring, the centre decorated with ribbons and musical trophies, blued and gilt spade hands, the twin barrel movement with silvered platform to the bimetallic balance with lever escapement, strike/repeat on gong to the back plate stamped B
6½in. (16cm.) high to hilt of handle

Lot Essay

Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert suggest that the stamp B may be the trade mark for Brunelot, although this has not been established (Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert Carriage Clocks, Antique Collectors' Club, 1974, p.434).
As porcelain and 'Limoges' enamel panels were produced in the same factories in Limoges (see footnote to lot 46) it is perhaps surprising that the style of decoration used on the two types of panel did not cross over more often. On the present clock the black painted background is is strongly reminiscent of those used on enamel panels.
