The hood with moulded shallow arch top, with panels to the sides, the trunk door also with shallow arch top, on panelled plinth with stepped skirting, the 11in. wide white painted dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring and recessed seconds ring below XII, cut steel hands, signed in the arch HALEY.LONDON, pinned directly to the five pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, the iron rod pendulum with brass lenticular bob and calibrated rating nut

Lot Essay

Charles Haley of Wigmore Street was apprenticed in 1762 and registered in the Clockmakers's Company 1781-1825. It is interesting to compare the design of this well proportioned and elegant longcase clock with another by Mudge and Dutton (see lot 82). The shallow arch dial, a style mostly employed by London makers, works particularly well with shorter clocks. In his use of a white painted dial Haley is engaging with the fashion for white enamel dials, which were difficult and expensive to make.
