The breakarch case with stepped pediment surmounted by a cupola with later pineapple finial, with silk-backed brass fish scale sound frets to the sides, applied moulded brass strips mounted to each angle, the brass-lined base raised on bracket feet, the 5in. wide arched silvered and engraved dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, signed in the centre GRANT Fleet Street LONDON No.243, blued steel spade hands, with subsidiary rings below for strike/silent and date, the twin fusee (wire lines) five pillar movement with anchor escapement, strike and trip repeat on bell, the back plate engraved with a repeat signature within a floral cartouche, with pendulum holdfast

John Grant was apprenticed to his illustrious uncle, Alexander Cumming. He was made a Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1781 and later appointed a Warden. He worked at 75 Fleet Street. Upon his death in 1810 he was succeeded by his son, also called John.
