A William and Mary walnut and marquetry longcase clock case
Circa 1690
The formerly rising hood with stepped top and blind-fret friezes (original side frets, later front fret), later side panels, later three-quarter columns to a front now cut for a door, with convex throat mouldings inlaid with floral marquetry to the front, the trunk door with later moulded frame and embellished with D-ended floral marquetry panels above and below a further marquetry panel depicting Chronos, his breast adorned with three lions passant, looming above a bewigged gentleman and a cherub, with crown and orb to one side, inlaid in black with the initials D O M, the plinth decorated with conforming floral marquetry and raised on a later stepped base

It has been suggeted that the marquetry on the trunk door is in commemoration of the deposition of James II in 1688. The initials DOM stand for Deo Optimo Maximo - To God the Best and Greatest and the three lions passant signify the Royal Arms of England.
