Lot Essay

In the catalogue for the 1976 Sladmore Gallery exhibition Terence Cuneo wrote "I have watched this beautiful old engine many times during trips to Knysna and have ridden on her footplate on more than one occasion. She is a delight to behold and her driver's pride and joy. Her brass work gleams, her copper and steel are burnished bright and the individual embellishments of springbok, badges and windmill that grace her polished boiler front are a joy to those who watch her steaming by.

It is my earnest hope and, I am confident, the hope of many others that, when this engine's time has come, there will be someone with the forethought to stay the breaker's torch and preserve a splendid example of South African steam power - for posterity, as indeed I have tried to do - on canvas."
