LINCOLN BLACKWOOD CONCEPT
1999
Black with black leather interior
At its introduction of the Blackwood, Ford described it as "Utility with Ultimate Style" and "Luxury taken to another level with all of the comfort of a luxury sedan and the convenience and versatility of a sport utility vehicle."
Blackwood is a variation on the successful Lincoln Navigator SUV and the prototype offered here is based on a Navigator platform. Its difference, and a major difference it was, saw the area behind the second set of seats replaced by a 4 foot 8 inch long covered bed. The Blackwood concept's appearance is dramatically different from run-of-the-mill SUVs while being luxuriously appointed in the Lincoln tradition.
The bed/trunk, the Blackwood prototype's distinctive feature, is particularly important, trying several features that went into the production Blackwood. The bed is covered by a permanently-mounted hard cover which raises electrically to ease access and storage for luggage or sports equipment. The tailgate is actually two side hinged doors, another feature designed for ease of access to the bed area. By design, there's room in Blackwood for all the fully-stocked golf club bags needed by its four occupants.
The outside of the bed/trunk and the tailgate doors subtly incorporate the "woody" décor that has always been indicative of multi-purpose vehicles. Unlike the maple and mahogany from which woodies are usually built, Blackwood's trim is in dark Wenge that complements the Blackwood concept's rich black exterior. Wenge is a dense wood from central Africa that is marked by distinctive striated graining. The Wenge trim is accented by horizontal pinstriping made from aluminum tape and is sealed with clear epoxy to protect it from the elements and highlight the natural beauty of its grain.
The interior of the Blackwood prototype is luxuriously trimmed in leather throughout and fitted with every imaginable option and convenience. Wenge wood accents highlight the center console and steering wheel. Wheels are custom mirror-polished billet 7-spoke alloys (these prototype wheels which are milled from a solid billet cost some $20,000 to make) with 32x11.50R-19 Michelin experimental tires with CNC-cut custom tread patterns. The front and rear fascias, lower cladding and the bed/trunk of the Blackwood prototype are made from fiberglass composite. The rear bed has a brushed nickel plating surface over the fiberglass and is equipped with fluorescent lighting for show purposes. It is an interesting exercise to study the vast amount of expense, time and resources that major manufacturers such as Ford devote in order to impress the public and press at the major auto shows around the world. Any new design features cannot be simply pulled from a parts bin, they literally have to be handmade and usually from the raw materials.
The Blackwood prototype offered here is the second prototype built with a 5.4 liter engine and has seen its share of show duty. The exterior paint and wood are in excellent condition while the interior is in very good condition but shows some wear and use. The Blackwood prototype is essentially identical to the production Blackwood in appearance and features. The Wenge wood trim on the bed/box and tailgate is real wood. The Blackwood prototype may prove to be the ultimate extension of the SUV envelope.
