GHIA ZAG CONCEPT
1990
White with aqua cloth with purple accents
Ghia's period description for Ghia Zag is "the sports multi-purpose concept, aimed at people who need a practical and versatile vehicle for the pursuit of varied domestic and leisure activities." Its concept contrasts as sharply with the Ghia Zig as its pure white exterior contrasts with the sparkling mica black of the Ghia Zig. Its theme is capacity: convertible passenger and functional capacity in its small van body, added capacity on its folding roof rack. Aerodynamics weren't sacrificed even in the Ghia Zag concept's upright stance and remarkably Ghia's designers managed to make it even more compact than its barchetta twin, 156mm (0.6 inches) shorter.
Ghia Zag has a horizontally-split rear tailgate that wraps around into the van sides and up into the roof to allow unimpeded access to the rear compartment. Removable rear seats and a folding front passenger seat maximize load capacity even for large objects. The roof rack neatly retracts into recesses to clean up aerodynamics when not carrying mountain bikes or kayaks.
Inside, Ghia Zag is as functional as its exterior. The tubing-framed seats are covered in functional and easily cleaned nylon fabric in aqua with bright purple accents on the doors. The tubing itself is decorated in a black and white pattern. An impressive collection of straps, clips and tiedowns fills the cargo area with enough options to secure any conceivable collection of "stuff".
The Ghia Zag nose features the same seven-element fiber optic lighting array as its twin however at the rear there are no conventional taillights, only a pair of nine-element fiber optic tail, brake and warning lights. It rides on 15" wheels with body color plastic wheel covers and P185/60VR-15 Goodyear tires. The doors function perfectly, panel fits are exceptional. Paint and interior are in very good condition. The pride of Ghia's craftsmen is evident both in the quality of their work and in the excellent attention and care which Ghia Zag has obviously received since its show career ended.
It's one neat little van.
