Lot Essay

The present picture was painted to celebrate Major Crawley winning the Grand Military Gold Cup of 1895 on Major Eustace Loder's Field Marshall. Crawley came fourth on the same horse in the Grand National of 1893 and won numerous other races including the National Hunt Steeplechase of 1891.
Major Crawley was not only one of the foremost military horseman of his generation but a remarkable 'all rounder' scoring centuries at Lord's for Harrow against Eton and for Cambridge against Oxford.
