Lot Essay

Born in Rome, Oreste Cortazzo studied under Léon Bonnat, who also taught Caillebotte and Toulouse-Lautrec. The emphasis which Bonnat placed on careful drawing pervades the present work with its fine line and exact modelling. The present work foreshadows the full Belle Epoque style that gained such popularity in Italy towards the end of the nineteenth century.
