KENT v. SUSSEX -- A collection of 9 early scorecards (average size 4½ x 3in; 11.4 x 7.6cm), dated 1846-50, featuring many of the great cricketers of the era. The cards include:
1. Grand Match of Cricket. Tunbridge Wells. Kent v. Sussex -- July 30th 1846. Complete scorecard recording innings of 132 (W. Mynn 41) and 112 (Adams 35) for Kent, and 59 and 101 (Box 26, Hammond 21 not out) for Sussex. Martingell for Kent (5 wickets in the 1st innings) and Wisden for Sussex (6 wickets in the 2nd innings) were the most successful bowlers (one name rubbed away).
2. Royal Cricket Ground, Brighton. Grand Match of Cricket, Kent v. Sussex, Thursday, June 24th, 1847, and following days. Scorecard printed on the ground for G. Mant by Phillips & Co., Brighton, listing the teams on one side, and giving the score at close of first day on the other. This includes N. Felix's 113 in the Kent total of 259. Dean took 5 wickets for Sussex, and Box played his part with a catch and a stumping.
3-4. Kent v. Sussex. Match of Cricket at Tunbridge Wells, Thursday [Friday], July 27-[28], 1848. A pair of scorecards for the first and second day's play, recording a tight game with innings of 103 and 60 for Sussex, and 82 and 80 for Kent. Wisden and Dean shared most of the the Kent wickets, while Hillier was the strike bowler for Kent, taking 10 wickets in the match (card for the second day with creasemark).
5. Grand Match between Kent and Sussex, Second Day, Friday, July 13, 1849. Scorecard showing 1st innings scores of 222 for Kent (A. Mynn 92) and 169 for Sussex (E. Napper 43, Wisden 35), and a score of 106 in Kent's incomplete 2nd innings (F. Pilch 35). Dean finally deprived Mynn of a century, taking a total of 7 wickets in the 1st innings.
6. Kent v. Sussex. Match of Cricket at Tunbridge Wells, Third Day, Saturday, August 18, 1849. Complete scorecard in a close match printing the Kent scores of 126 (F. Pilch 38) and 54 (A. Mynn 26) on one side, and on the other the two Sussex totals of 54 and 108. Top scorer for Sussex was Bushby c. Clifford b. Hinckley for 25 in the 2nd innings, against whose wicket Hammond has inscribed "got capital." Hammond, who was not in the Sussex team, has also inscribed the card: "I was so poorly that I could not play for the first day -- took umpire two last days."
With three other scorecards, one for a match, Sussex with A. Mynn given v. All England, recording a score of 76 by Felix, with details of an incomplete Kent v. Sussex match on verso; a scorecard on paper giving full results of the same Kent v. Sussex match; and a scorecard for Kent v. Sussex, Second Day, Tuesday, June 18th, 1850. Except in the case noted, Hammond features as a player in these matches, hence his reason for preserving these scorecards at a date when print runs were comparatively small and very few have survived.
