Further details
An imposing portrait of a tall batsman, clearly of very strong physique, yet with a relaxed, gentlemanly poise, and a debonair air lent by long sideburns and the red silk handkerchief hanging from the white tunic which is smartly trimmed in blue. He seems used to command, and is perhaps both the team captain and local landowner. While it is difficult to date the picture precisely, the underarm bowling in the match beyond is one indication that it was painted in the first half of the 19th century. Some of the fielders wear tophats, as do the umpires who are also attired in boots and breeches.
