Lot Essay

The first panel, seemingly commemorating a UK-France Treaty and its subsequent passage through the House of Commons, presumably the agreement on the Suez Canal, bears the date 1872. However, the agreement between Queen Victoria and Napoleon III could not post-date 1871, the year the Emperor was defeated at Sedan and overthrown.
