The Loving cup was typically a large goblet, used for sharing and celebrating health during communial events during the Elizabethan and Stuart peroid.
The cup is sold with a hand written note inscribed I have in my possession a wooden cup or chalice with lid which may have some connection with Winchester. It .....? carved under the base the inscription William Collet.
It was given to my husband's Grandmother Mrs Roberts, by a Mrs Saunders of ......? Sussex, who had ....? it from her husband who had been a choirboy in W. Cath. Mrs S, died in 1909 aged about 40. Her children played with the cup & cut their teeth on the lid.
The cup is of dark brown wood, is 8'' high, with a spike on top ....? diameter (sic)
