Lot Essay

Multi-panelled cupboards of this type were made throughout Ireland during the 19th century. Those made in Ulster are generally plainer than those made elsewhere in Ireland. The use of the decorative gothic arcading below the frieze suggests that this example is from Southern Ireland. It has the rare feature of multiple layers of undisturbed paint, including evidence of red paint, now over-lain with oak simulated paint-work.
