This tallboy shows the characteristics of much Welsh furniture from this period with brown, straight grained, sessile oak used as the "show wood" in the drawer fronts and surrounding framework; the use of the darker, more irregular and knotted pedunculate oak, common to the hill slopes of Wales, is used in the sides. Pine is the major secondary wood used.

Interestingly, the fretwork on the front and sides below the cornice shows the hand of two woodworkers. The side pieces have been made by a less experienced worker, probably an apprentice, and are noticeably less proficient in detail than the more expert front section and canted angle carvings.
