Similar chairs are illustrated in Dr B Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1990, p.364, fig.nw160 and nw161.

A number of such chairs are stamped 'BANCROFT', who were a family business of several generations in the Salford and Liverpool area during the late 18th and early 19th century when the regional chairmaking traditions were influenced by the classical patterns of mahogany chairs in the Hepplewhite and Chippendale style.
