Lot Essay

The distinctive serpent like creature, with what appears to be a beak, appears on chairs illustrated in Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.487, particularly fig.4.170a where it is in combination with rosette filled guilloche, and the armchair on p.489, fig.1.73 where it is in combination with the meandering foliate motif seen in the uprights of this lot.
