A Nicaraguan coconut and silver mounted tea caddy, circa 1825
the body incised with flags, native animals, birds and foliage, and inscribed RIVAS, and REPUBLIC DE NICARAGUA, the silver feet and handles cast with rocaille ornament, the hinged cover to the top applied with a llama finial -- 6½in. (16.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

The town of Rivas is located in the south of the country on the west bank of Lago de Nicaragua. The casket may possibly date from 1823/4 when Agustin I was overthrown, Mexico became a republic, and Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador regained their autonomy as republics and formed the Central American Federation.
