The present snuff box contains a typed note inscribed Snuff box from either Shaw or Henderson family. Dr Theodore Gall, of Antwerp and Paris, Phrenologist flourished about A.D. 1798-1813.

Franz Joseph Gall, anatomist, physiologist, founder of phrenology, was born near Baden in 1758. Early on he formed the generalization that in the human being a powerful memory is associated with prominent eyes. Gradually he arrived at the conclusion that the talents and dispositions of men depend on the brain, and may be inferred with precision from the external appearance of the skull. He moved to Paris in 1807, where in 1810 published the first instalment of 'Anatomie et physiologie de système nerveux en général, et du cerveau en particulier, avec des observation sur la possibilité de reconnaître plusieurs dispositions intellectuelles et morales de l'homme et des animaux par la configuration de leurs tetes.' His ideas were rebuffed in London in 1823. He died near Paris on August 22nd 1828.
