in the form of a partridge and her chicks, modelled as an allegory of the Pelican in her Peity, inset with glass eyes, the hinged back with scallop shell catch, traces of polychrome -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) wide

OED. This fable is given by Epiphanius and St Augustine; it appears to be of Egyptian origin, and to have referred originally to another bird.
