Lot Essay

Comparisons can be made to an oval boxwood snuff box illustrated in Owen Evan Thomas's book Utensils of Wood, plate 38, depicting the execution of Charles I. The incised hatching is very similar in style to the present box. The stork to the base of the box possibly relates to Thomas Fido's crest. The present box is possibly by the same hand as lot 628.
