The demi-lune white marble top above a frieze with oak leaves and centred by a flowerhead, on leaf-wrapped fluted baluster tapering legs headed by blocks studded with paterae, on leaf-wrapped tapering feet joined by shaped stretchers carved with husks, the underside of the marble top inscribed in blue chalk 'Neame Wimbledon' and in black '... Up Maugham 229', regilt, the marble with five holes to the underside but probably original, possibly originally with a concave-fronted stretcher

Lot Essay

The design of this pier-table relates to a pattern published by Matthias Lock in his A New Book of Pier Frames, 1769, (pl. 2) (see Furniture History, 1979, pl. 65).

The laurel-carved frieze and fluted legs headed by blocks filled with paterae relate to a pair of giltwood pier tables with painted tops illustrated in C. Claxton-Stevens & S. Whittington, 18th Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, Woodbridge, 1983, pp. 340-341.
