Lot Essay

The table top displays beribboned garlands of Venus's roses amongst flowers festooned around a medallion that evokes lyric poetry and probably depicts Venus's attendant Grace Aglaia bound by Cupid. Such trompe l'oiel paintings in the 'antique' manner were inspired by engravings after the work of the artist Angelika Kauffmann (d. 1810) (see C. G. Boerner, Angelika Kauffmann und Ihre Zeit, Düsseldorf, 1979, p. 65, no. 128).
