Lot Essay

This wonderful Irish centre table displays Venus's shell badge on its serpentined apron, which is antique stippled and carved with 'Roman' acanthus around lozenge-carved panels. Its bacchic lion-paw feet are squared in typically Irish form and headed by acanthus-carved hocks.
There is a related silver table with the same distintive foot carving at Malahide Castle, Dublin, illustrated in G. Kenyon, The Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle, Dublin, 1994, pp. 90-91.
