This bedside cupboard with scalloped gallery was almost certainly commissioned by George William, 6th Earl of Coventry (1722-1809) from one of the leading cabinet-makers that he employed to furnish his country seat, Croome Court in Worcestershire and his London house, 29 (now 106) Piccadilly. In June 1759 the Royal cabinet-makers, William Vile and John Cobb invoiced the Earl 'For 2 Good Mahog'y Close Stoole night Tables on Castors ... £5.16s' and in 1762 'For a neat mahog'y Close stool with a Wood Top and a Stone pan to Ditto ... 10s'. Between 1757 and 1773 they supplied around 1,300 items so it is possible that this bedside cupboard was one of those items.
