A serpentine chest with cluster-column angles and mounted with almost identical 'quatrefoil' key escutcheons was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 July 1999, lot 131 (£122,500). The cusped profile of the shaped bracket feet is also extremely similar. The handles on the present lot feature on pieces supplied by the St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker, Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779). For example the green and gold japanned clothes press, ordered for the closet hung with oriental paper adjoining the State bedchamber at Nostell Priory is fitted with the same pattern of handle as the present lot (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol II, figs. 239 and 263).
