The Ionic-scrolled Grecian sofa, with golden flutes sunk in trompe l'oiel black-figured rosewood and with golden Apollo-sunflowered bas reliefs attached to the arm-volutes, whose scrolled bolsters follow a pattern published in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1804. Together with its pair, and a second smaller pair of sofas, it formed part of the seat furniture commissioned for the St. James's house of William Harry, 3rd Earl of Darlington (and subsequently 1st Marquess and Duke of Cleveland (d. 1842)) of Raby Castle, Darlington.
