Lot Essay

The label of Henry Kettle of St. Paul's Church Yard, London appears on a very similar chest-of-drawers with the same triple-fluted 'pilasters' flanking the drawers. It is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1740-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 295, fig. 552A.
A closely related serpentine chest was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 17 July 1998, lot 142 (£19,550).
