"In this brightly resolved work, Emily defines the post-summer dryness that creates a muted scattered carpet of seeds and grasses over the country. Her life-long observations of her place called Alalgura has taught her that despite the dryness, those underground tuber vegetables and certain berries are just right for picking. When wind sweeps away the grasses, and leaves a near bare country, survival becomes tough.
Underlying this work are light hints in pink of her main story, namely, off the Anooralya yam. These lines suggest the body-paint lines that she applied to herself in ceremony ("awelye"). As well, these lines indicate the underground root system of the yam. From an aerial perspective, a layered view of leaves, petals, seeds and fruit intermingle on the ground. The colours indicate the stage of maturity of the food sources. Part of the eductaion that is integral to ceremony, is learning how to recognise the readiness of foods for eating and how to prepare them. Some species are suitable and medicine, others are used as love potions. Paramount to these ceremonies, is the belief that these songs, stories and ritual help assure survival."
