Lot Essay

"Gabriel's Horn refers to John F Peto, a nineteenth century American still-life painter...This picture was inspired by a photograph of John F Peto with his cornet as a young man. It is to do with a passage that comes from the Bible, when Gabriel calls the faithful by blowing his horn. So it deals with the link between the horns of the animal and faith - or the "beasts of the faithful" (P Cripps, op.cit., p. 8)
