CHURCHILL, Sir Winston Spencer (1874-1965). Autograph signature ('Winston S. Churchill') dated 3 June 1944, 3 DAYS BEFORE D-DAY, with the signatures of Jan Smuts, Ernest Bevin, Hastings Ismay and others, in the autograph album of H.M.S. Largs, H.Q. Ship for Force 'S', Normandy Landing and South of France Landing (inscribed on title page), signatures on 8½ pages, 4to; the volume subsequently used on H.M.S. Artifex, Fleet Train, British Pacific Fleet, 1945-1946, P.&O. M.V. Palana and P.&O. S.S. Strathaird; green limp morocco (lightly worn, sprung). Provenance. Captain H.S. Allan R.D. RNR, commanding H.M.S. Largs; and by descent.
CHURCHILL INSPECTS THE NORMANDY LANDING FLEET 3 DAYS BEFORE D-DAY. On the afternoon of 3 June Churchill travelled down in his private train to Southampton where, with Jan Smuts (Prime Minister of South Africa), Ernest Bevin (Foreign Secretary), and General Hastings Ismay, they watched the embarkation of troops of the Tyneside Division before observing, from a motor launch, the assembly of landing craft. The following day brought news of the fall of Rome. On the morning of 6 June began the liberation of France.
