SENECA (c. 3 BC - 65AD). Tragoediae, [Venice, in aedibus Aldi et Andreae soceri, October 1517]. 8° (162 x 91mm.). Woodcut device on title and last page, AN ILLUMINATED COPY, the large initials in red and blue, the smaller ones and the paragraph marks alternating in red and blue, rubricated, ruled in red. (Small wormhole in the foremargin as far as d2 just touches 2 letters of text, upper margins at the end very lightly waterstained). 18th-century French mottled calf gilt, gilt and gauffered edges. (Joints a little rubbed). Provenance: Michael Wodhull (his characteristic dated signature, 21 April 1783, price, name of auctioneer and notes on an endpaper).

Apart from the minor faults noted above A VERY FINE COPY of the only Aldine edition of Seneca, this one with reading 'Scenecae' on the title. Illuminated copies of Aldine books are not common. Adams S903; Renouard 80/4.
