Forming part of the collection of The Right Hon. The Earl of Derby, London: C. Brown, 1820. 2° (535 x 365mm.). Engraved dedication, 20 etched plates by Winstanley on 19 sheets, 4 double-page. (Some spotting and browning, library stamp on verso of title, preface and lower margin of penultimate plate). Contemporary green calf, gilt triple fillet and blind-stamped border, the arms of the Earl of Derby stamped in gilt on front cover, g.e. (Rubbed and scuffed).
This suite of prints highlights the acquisitions of James Stanley, 19th Earl of Derby (1664-1735/6). Francis Russell compares the "Knowsley Gallery" favourably to those at Blenheim and Wilton: it "was of considerable historical importance ... It was indeed the first such collection to be celebrated in a series of engraved reproductions ... and is as comprehensively documented as any gallery of its generation".
