This suite of prints highlights the acquisitions of James Stanley, 19th Earl of Derby (1664-1735/6). Francis Russell compares the "Knowsley Gallery" favourably to those at Blenheim and Wilton: it "was of considerable historical importance ... It was indeed the first such collection to be celebrated in a series of engraved reproductions ... and is as comprehensively documented as any gallery of its generation". The Earl's own meticulous notes, preserved nearly intact in the Knowsley archive, reveal the provenance and cost of most of his paintings. F. Russell The Derby Collection, vol. 52, pp. 143-180.
