A PAIR OF EMPIRE CREAM-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT CHAISES,
circa 1810, each stamped P. BRION,
each with ribbon-tied fasces cresting over a rosette and stiff-leaf top rail, the padded back and seat covered in patterned blue silk, on turned double baluster legs headed by panelled flowerheads, on lapetted bun feet, each with paper label M. Blanche Stephenson, each stencilled IG 1745, 43697 and TU933 (2)

Lot Essay

These chaises formed part of an extensive suite supplied by the menuisier-sculpteur Pierre-Gaston Brion (born 1767) to the Intendance General or the Garde Meuble Impirial in 1811 and described on June 14th as follows:

The TU stencilled mark also signifies that the chairs furnished one of the rooms in the Tuileries Palace.

Two fauteuils from this suite with the brands TU 932, IG 1744 and a label 241-1744 were sold Sotheby's New York, 27 October 1990, lot 107. Two fauteuils and two chaises from the suite were sold Mantre Kohn, Paris, 30 November 1994, lot 153.
