This marked the birth of a life-long passion for antique weapons. Although Albert achieved a Distinction in History at school, he had a scientific mind, and entered a scientific profession, initially with the National Coal Board, and later with the Central Electricity Generating Board for some 22 years, retiring in 1985. Throughout these years he pursued a variety of interests, ranging from pianolas to arms and armour, all with enthusiasm and understanding based on research with the aid of his extensive library. However it is for Wigan crossbows that he will be principally remembered. His article entitled 'An Old Wigan Trade, The Sporting Bullet Crossbow and its Makers, 1640-1840' (Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries, vol. 34 (1991), pp. 30-41) threw fresh light on this little-known subject. Many of the bows described and illustrated in the article are included in this sale. BOOKS AND CATALOGUES All sold not subject to return
