GREGORY IX (Pope, 1227-1241). Secretarial document, a papal bull of indulgence addressed to the faithful in the provinces of Sens and Rheims, Perugia, 6 February 1235, the word 'Gregorius' with foliate decorations and flourishes, some decoration to four other capitals, medieval endorsements on verso, in Latin on vellum, 275 x 210mm (a few small holes; some rubbing leading to loss of legibility of a few words on left margin); lead seal with heads of saints Peter and Paul and 'GREGORIUS PP VIIII', 38 mm diameter, attached by red cords (reattached).
A papal bull granting ten days' indulgence to any who donate money to the almshouse of Meaux. 'As it has been proposed to us on behalf of our beloved sons the master and brothers of the almshouse of Meaux that no small multitude of the poor and infirm gathers at that house, to whom they furnish the necessities of life beyond their own resources, we advise, request and urge our whole commonalty, enjoining in the Lord and towards the remission of your sins, that you pay such pious alms and grateful charitable support to their messenger when he should come to you for this purpose, that, through these and other good deeds which with God's inspiration they might perform, you may gain the joys of eternal felicity'.
Gregory IX was responsible for the collection and abridgement of the Decretales, the definitive repository of canon law. There were a number of Benedictine foundations in Meaux, chief town of the Brie district, to which the almshouse referred to could have been attached.
Provenance: Sotheby's 7 December 1999, lot 21.
