He took his company to France in 1422 in return for a contract to receive regular wages, served under John, Duke of Bedford (John of Lancaster, Henry VI's Regent in France) took part in the siege of Orleans and was named as one of Bedford's three lieutenants by Joan of Arc in her letter to Henry VI of 22 March 1429. In June 1429 she wrote that Scales was taken, with Talbot and Sir John Fastolf, at the battle of Patay. He was active in Normandy in 1434-1435, and was besieged in Avranches and present at the siege of Mont Saint-Michel, before taking part in the siege of Saint-Denis in August 1435. He remained in France until the English possessions were lost, and in 1439 Henry VI granted him an annual sum of 100 livres in recognition of his services. In England he joined the Lancastrians and was finally taken in the Yorkists' attack on the Tower of London in 1460 and murdered shortly afterwards.
Jean de Villiers served the English king from 1422 until September 1435 when, having captured Saint-Denis, he rejoined the French side. Michel Durant is recorded as Sheriff of Rouen and Receiver General of Normandy.
