BLAEU, Willem Janszoun (1571-1638) A pair of table globes, terrestrial and celestial. Amsterdam: 1602 [but after 1621].

A fine pair of table globes, diameter 23 cm, overall height 38 cm. Each globe made up of a set of 12 engraved gores. The terrestrial with coastlines in outline colour, cartouches neatly decorated, seas filled with ships and sea monsters. (Globe gores, lightly discoloured and browned, some soiling to Northern Hemisphere, several small areas of old (but neat) restoration to Europe and Sahara areas). The celestial with elaborately coloured celestial figures. (Some light discolouration of gores and light rubbing to upper hemisphere.) The two globes each with brass meridian circles, stamped 86 and 88 respectively. (Lacking hour circles and with old repair to one quadrant of the celestial). Both globes mounted on four legged ebonied oak Dutch stands, horizon rings with original papered scales supported by four columns, united by oak cross stretchers and turned circular platform and meridian support (small pillar holes to the terrestrial horizon).

A VERY RARE PAIR OF BLAEU TABLE GLOBES, ONE OF 18 PAIRS EXTANT. Of this number 13 are in institutional hands and a further 18 individual celestial or terrestrial globes of the 23cm globe are recorded. This example of the 9" diameter Blaeu globe is in the third state for the terrestrial [the first two states are recorded but no example known] and in the second state for the celestial. Willem Blaeu published his first globe, a celestial in 1597/98, after his stay with Tycho Brake in 1596. In 1598 he settled in Amsterdam and established his publishing house, as well as making scientific instruments and globes. All globes by Willem Blaeu are rare, and this particular pair are in good condition. Van der Krogt Globi Neerlandici BLA III; Dekker Globes at Greenwich GLBO 151; 152 Van der Krogt Old Globes of the Netherlands Bla 4 and 6. (2)
